5 Quick Tips on Outfits!

Ah, the age old question. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten this text:

CLIENT: Hey, super stoked about our upcoming shoot! I just have one tiny question: What do I wear? What should my husband wear? What should my kids wear?

I got you. Here are my 5 quick tips to all things outfits! If you’re here for a quick fix, scroll to the bottom to find the link to my Pinterest outfit guide!

1. ARE YOU COMFORTABLE IN THAT?

Seriously. Are you comfortable in that? Do you feel good in that?

Yes? Great, you’re halfway there! One of the most important things is that you feel good.

No? If you don’t feel good in your outfit, chances are, you’re going to be tugging at it or re-adjusting it constantly.

Yolaly and Joel are GREAT at outfits. Experts. Seriously. They wore coordinated neutrals and jeans for their in-home session!

2. COORDINATION OVER MATCHING

This one might seem tricky, but I promise it’s really easy! Think of it less like matching your prom date’s tie, and more like creating a color palette.

If you’re at a loss, go neutral. Browns, whites, blacks, grays. Move out from there! There are some really great examples on my Pinterest board (linked at the end)!

3. TEXTURE IS YOUR FRIEND!

This can really help when trying to pick an outfit, in any situation! I’m sure you have a chunky knit something lying around… maybe a cardigan or a scarf? There’s a new texture!

Texture not only makes everything cute and comfy, it adds new dimensions to your outfit. You might also think about something lace, ruffle-y, a ribbon belt… the list goes on!

4. FOOTWEAR.

If you’ve seen any of my photos, you know there’s a VERY good chance of an epic wide shot. You know what will be in that shot? Your shoes. In my opinion, shoes are the make or break part of any outfit. Make sure your shoes go with your outfit, and make sure you won’t hurt yourself walking in them!! If you have a pair of heels in mint condition but you really want to wear them, bring them separately and only put them on when we start shooting!

Every shoe has an outfit, and every outfit has a shoe. Take the extra 2 minutes to try the shoes on with your outfit and make sure you love the combo!

5. WOULD YOU ACTUALLY WEAR THAT?

Look, I’m all about gorgeous dresses blowing in the wind on the top of a mountain, but IF YOU’RE NOT, then don’t wear it! If you feel your best in distressed jeans and boots, WEAR IT. If you’re all about going crazy with the flowing layers and lace, WEAR IT. Prepare for caps lock, because this is important. DO NOT WEAR SOMETHING YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE IN BECAUSE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO. Attached at the bottom of this blog is a link to my Outfit Inspo Pinterest board, it has several different types of outfits, examples of coordination, and it INCLUDES men’s outfits! Take a peek at it, and get inspired but DO NOT feel obligated to dress exactly like those photos. Do you, always.

This is a PRIME example of wearing what you want. Distressed jeans and a burgundy oversized sweater. Cute, cozy, and perfect!

HONORARY MENTIONS:

-No-no on the logos, my friend.

-Wear the type jewelry you already wear, if you wear it at all.

-If you’re trying out a new hair do, make sure you get it done at least a week before the shoot! I know this isn’t outfit related TECHNICALLY… but a week after a new haircut, you know exactly what you want to do, instead of fussing with a brand new haircut!

-Neon probably isn’t the way you want to go… they tend to reflect color onto anything close to them, including your faces….

-DRESS FOR THE WEATHER. I only carry so many hand warmers, and I don’t want you to have heatstroke. Please look at the weather!

-If you’ve read this far, I’m guess you’re planning ahead. GOOD ON YOU. Planning ahead is key. It’s a lot less likely for your key outfit piece to be on the bottom of the laundry basket if you’ve planned ahead!
